How Long Do Foreclosures Stay on Credit Reports?

A foreclosure happens when a borrower can no longer make his mortgage payments and the bank takes back the house. A foreclosure will be reported to the credit agencies from the date the court finalizes the proceedings; it will remain in a credit file for seven years, according to Experian.
